Instructor Registry

The Instructors Registry is a database to track the training and certification of Association instructors. The Instructors Registry will be used by the Association to select instructors for the Tai Chi Chuan Teacher Academy and as a resource for those looking for qualified instructors in their communities. Association approved instructors are listed in the Instructors Registry.

The Association reserves the right to remove an instructor from the Instructors Registry.

Five Levels of Association Instructors

To provide for the instructional needs of its members and their communities, the Association has created five levels of instructors. The five levels of instructors are: Affiliated Instructor, Certified Instructor, Academy Instructor, Senior Instructor and Master Instructor.

General Instructor Requirements

Instructors have seminar attendance requirements. Instructors from Certified Instructor and higher level of instructor have an additional requirement of attending at least one Directors and Instructors seminar every five years.

All who apply to be an instructor must meet general requirements, as well as specific requirements for the level applied for.

New instructor applicants and current instructors who are applying for advanced levels must meet the following:

  1. Be a current Association member.
  2. Be of good moral character.
  3. Complete and submit the Instructors Application with the following items:
    1. Application Form
    2. Code of Conduct and Ethics
    3. Yang Family Morals and Commandments
    4. Instructor, Affiliated School and YCF Center Release of Liability Form
    5. Application fee
  4. Submit a resume’ with a recommendation from one of the following;
    1. YCF Center Director
    2. Current or past Tai Chi Chuan or other Martial Arts Teacher
    3. Three colleagues
  5. Have a history of dedication to the art of Tai Chi Chuan;
  6. Demonstrate a commitment to learning and teaching Traditional Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan by doing the following:
    1. Continue to grow and learn more about Tai Chi Chuan by taking more seminars and exchanging knowledge between colleagues
    2. Teach a minimum 52 hours of classes in Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan each year
  7. Pay an annual Instructors Registry fee of $150.00 US. [Note: Affiliated School Directors and YCF Center Directors will only pay the required fees for the school or center and will not be required to pay the annual Instructors Registration fee of $150.]
  8. Pay yearly dues and fees promptly. [A friendly reminder will be sent when dues and fees are overdue by 1 month. If dues and fees are late 2 months or more, a $50 late fee will be charged. If the annual fee is past due by 6 months or more, the instructor will be removed from the Instructors Registry. Once an instructor has been removed from the registry, the instructor must reapply to be an instructor.]

Affiliated Instructor

The purpose of the category of Affiliated Instructor is to welcome into the Association those who have an interest to promote and teach Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. Affiliated Instructors may be members that are just beginning to teach Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan or are from other Tai Chi Chuan schools or organizations that want to become affiliated with the Association.

Besides meeting the general requirements for Association instructors, Affiliated Instructors have these additional requirements:

  1. Be Rank 2 or higher.
  2. Have participated in at least 3 Association seminars taught by Master Yang Jun or by a Master Instructor.
  3. Include with their applications an assessment completed by a YCF Center Director or experienced Certified Instructor.
  4. Attend at least one seminar with Master Yang Jun each year or attend at least 10 hours of training with a YCF Center Director as a condition for the yearly renewal of the Affiliated Instructor’s Certificate.

Certified Instructor

Applicants for Certified Instructors will be required to graduate from the Tai Chi Chuan Teacher Academy. Where Tai Chi Chuan Teacher Academy classes are not available, the applicant can become a Certified Instructor by meeting the requirements listed below.

Besides meeting the general requirements for Association instructors, Certified Instructors have these additional requirements:

  1. Be Rank 4 or higher.
  2. Have participated in at least 5 Association seminars taught by Master Yang Jun or by a Master Instructor.
  3. Applications for Certified Instructor must also include an Instructor Assessment. The Assessment is completed by a YCF Center Director or experienced Certified Instructor.
  4. Attend four seminars every five years with Master Yang Jun or a Master Instructor. Of the four required seminars Certified Instructors must attend two Directors and Instructors Seminars or Teacher Academy Seminars for the region. It is encouraged that these instructors receive at least 10 hours training from an Academy Instructor or higher every year.

Academy Instructor

Academy Instructors are Association instructors who have achieved high standards in moral character and the teaching of Tai Chi Chuan and are listed in the Instructors Registry. Academy Instructors are expected to adhere to the guidelines of the Association’s Tai Chi Chuan Teacher Academy in teaching its curriculum and in providing training credits for students. Applications for Academy Instructor must be approved by the Training Standards Department to teach for the Association’s Tai Chi Chuan Teacher Academy.

Besides meeting the general requirements for Association instructors, Academy Instructors have these additional requirements:

  1. Be Rank 5 or higher.
  2. Achieved 500 or more teaching hours since becoming a Certified Instructor.
  3. Have participated in at least 10 association seminars taught be Master Yang Jun or a Master Instructor.
  4. Submit to the association satisfactory Instructor Evaluations from at least 50% of their students from two evaluation periods. An evaluation period must cover a minimum of six months of instruction by the instructor applicant.
  5. If not teaching with a YCF Tai Chi Chuan Center or an Affiliated School, the instructor must have at least 10 Association members as students.
  6. Attend three seminars every five years with Master Yang Jun or a Master Instructor . Two of the three seminars must be Directors and Instructors Seminars or Teacher Academy Seminars for the region.. It is encouraged that these instructors receive 10 hours training from an Academy Instructor or higher every year.

Senior Instructor

Senior Instructors are accomplished instructors that have achieved success in coaching and mentoring teachers of Tai Chi Chuan. They have earned the respect of their peers and contributed substantially to the promotion and spread of Tai Chi Chuan. Senior Instructors exemplify the standards of Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan in their teaching and personal behavior. Applicants must demonstrate this by their actions and by receiving respect and recognition of their peers.

Besides meeting the general requirements for Association instructors, Senior Instructors have these additional requirements:

  1. Be a model of exemplary moral character for others to follow.
  2. Have outstanding skills in the teaching of Tai Chi Chuan.
  3. Always seek ways to grow and to become a better person.
  4. Actively promote the mission and goals of Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan and always protect the reputation and image of Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan.
  5. Be Rank 6 or higher and be an Academy Instructor.
  6. Have 2,000 hours or more of teaching Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan after becoming a Certified Instructor, Center Director, or Association officer.
  7. Have participated in at least 20 seminars taught by Master Yang Jun.
  8. Have submitted to the Association satisfactory Instructor Evaluations from at least 75% of their students from five evaluation periods. An evaluation period must cover a minimum of six months of instruction by the instructor applicant.
  9. If not teaching with a YCF Tai Chi Chuan Center or an Affiliated School the Instructor must have at least 15 Association members as students.
  10. Every five years attend two Directors and Instructors Seminars or Teacher Academy Seminars for the region.
  11. Meet at least two of the following three requirements:
    1. Have achieved notable recognition or have great influence in the community as it relates to Tai Chi Chuan.
    2. Have been officially recognized for work in support of the Association’s mission and goals.
    3. Have been officially recognized for promoting Tai Chi Chuan by governmental agencies or community organizations.
  12. Help train more instructors to meet the future needs of the Association as it expands and grows.

Master Instructor

Master Instructors have achieved the highest level of respect from their peers and have demonstrated superior skills in teaching and mentoring teachers of Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. Successful applicants for Master Instructor will be officially recognized by the Association as a Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Master. Applicants for Master Instructor demonstrate the highest level of moral conduct and have received widespread recognition as a leader in the Tai Chi Chuan community. The Instructors Advisory Board reviews applications for Master Instructor. Successful applicants are recommended to the Association president for his consideration and determination as whether the applicant has met the requirements for approval.

Besides meeting the general requirements for Association instructors, Master Instructors have these additional requirements:

  1. Be Rank 7 or higher and be a Senior Instructor.
  2. Have 4,000 hours or more of teaching Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan since becoming a Certified Instructor, Center Director or Association officer.
  3. Have participated in at least 30 seminars taught by Master Yang Jun or a Master Instructor.
  4. Have submitted to the Association satisfactory Instructor Evaluations from at least 90% of their students from five evaluation periods. An evaluation period must cover a minimum of six months of instruction by the instructor applicant.
  5. If not teaching with a YCF Tai Chi Chuan Center or an Affiliated School the instructor must have at least 20 Association members as students.
  6. Attend at least two Directors and Instructors Seminars every five years.
