I was talking to Yang Jun today and we happened to touch on the 'homophone error' theory which had been brought up. Yang Jun agreed that anyone who studied seriously for even a short time would be unlikely to make such gross errors on the meaning of the names, let alone Yang Luchan, a practitioner who took his taijiquan more seriously than most people can these days. I mentioned one example, the Chen style lan za yi (lazy about tying coat) versus Yang style lan que wei (grasp the bird's tail). Yang Jun told me in Yang style they also used to use lan za yi, and the name was changed by Yang Jianhou, the idea for the new name coming from the story of the sparrow which could not fly off Yang Luchan's hand.
