Teacher Academy USA TTM-1 program: Does fascia mediate the health effects
of Tai Chi? with guest faculty Dr. Patricia Huston

Anatomy and Bio Mechanics:

Sunday, April 11, 2021. 12:00pm-3:00pm (US Eastern Time)

Course Description:

There is compelling evidence that Tai Chi has many health benefits, including the prevention and relief of many of the effects of chronic disease. Fascia, or the connective tissue that surrounds all our muscles, joints, organs and body cavities, is currently an area of intense research as evidence mounts that fascia plays several critical roles in the body. Once thought of as a type of “packaging” that provides structural support to the body, fascia is now known to also communicate with the circulatory, lymphatic and immune systems and play a large role in both the natural healing process and chronic disease progression.  Could fascia play a role in the health effects of Tai Chi? A simple cellular interaction will be described that explains how cells in fascia can both help to heal or harm the body. Much like how a plant responds to its environmental conditions for better or for worse, these cells respond to their microenvironment. There are many influences on the body’s microenvironment, including epigenetics, diet, exercise, pollution and the social determinants of health. Dr. Huston will present a theory identifying several ways Tai Chi optimizes healthy fascia, the microenvironment and the cellular interactions to help prevent and mitigate the effects of chronic disease.
